English Faculty: Students received more nuanced guidance in Lent 2023, before the university's overarching AI policy was finalised. English students were told AI could assist with specific tasks such as "sketching a bibliography" or supporting "early stages of the research process," provided this occurred under supervisor guidance. This conditional permission contrasts sharply with HSPS's blanket warning.


Engineering Department: Some first-year engineering students received explicit permission to use ChatGPT for structuring coursework, with the requirement that they disclose its use and include the specific prompts employed. University-wide Position: Before these faculty-specific policies emerged, Cambridge's pro-vice-chancellor for education, Bhaskar Vira, told student media in February 2023 that a ChatGPT ban was not "sensible" because "we have to recognise that this is a new tool that is available."
